1 of 6 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans
Am’s in the United Kingdom. I bought this TTA
back in September of 2000 and have since completely
restored it meaning new paint work, new weather stripping,
all new emblems, front seats reupholstered in original
colour leather and new carpet fitted along with other
smaller interior bits.
Engine been rebuilt and I’m
just installing it and getting it ready for the first
start-up (this is as of July 21st 2008), strong build
with all performance parts including Eagle H-beam con
rods, Ross racing pistons, larger stainless valves,
ported heads, full roller cam and rockers setup and
lots of more fun stuff.
Never was the Firebird more powerful
or more refined than in 1989, when the GM and Pontiac
unleashed its 20th Anniversary Trans Am. The Trans Am
celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1989, and Pontiac
responded with a special gift to fans: an anniversary
edition with a turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 beneath the
hood. Last seen powering Buick's sizzling Grand National
and GNX, the 250-horse-power turbo -- cranking out an
imposing 340 pounds -- feet of torque-sliced 0-60 mph
acceleration times to an astounding five seconds or
less in stock form. Rollicking action was back in style,
so long as a customer was willing to pay $10,000 more
than GTA price for the privilege. 1,550 Trans Am devotees
did exactly that and another 5 pilot cars rolled off
the assembly plant at Van Nuys CA with the power plants
and drive line built and shipped in from PAS Inc. at
their City of Industry CA facilities where GM shipped
them back for final tuning and quality control before
they went to the Pontiac distribution centre to hit
the showrooms across the US.
One of the most potent Trans Ams
ever built, the 20th Anniversary model came only with
automatic shift. No crass racing stripes marred the
pure white body, adorned by nothing more than subtle
"20th Anniversary" cloisonné emblems
and "Turbo Trans Am" badges. A stock Anniversary
edition served as pace car for the 73rd running of the
Indy 500 that year.
